Learning Outcome 3

Annotating a passage may appear straightforward but yet it is a very in depth process that evolves with each time you read. At first I read the text in a very broad sense. This initial reading serves as a foundation to understand the author’s main purpose, allowing me to grasp the general idea. Upon the second reading, I dive into the passage with a more concrete intent. This time, I use my highlighter and mark sections, words, or phrases that stand out to me that seem important. Also, if I don’t understand something I also highlight it so I can come back and look up what it means so I can put the definition next to it. With anything I highlight, next to it, even if i understand it i like to put it into my own words so it makes more sense to me in my head. Doing this is a crucial  act to explain in my own terms and transform the reading into my own terms, causing me to have a deeper connection with the material. This process is like layering a cake, 1 step at a time and the further you get the harder it gets. After all of that I go back to see any questions that need to be answered. The highlighted points, now with explanations, become points of interest because it is important information. This strategy not only makes the answering process a lot quicker and easier but it helps you better understand the passage and what it means. Overall,  my annotation process is a deep process that has multiple steps and makes further work with the passage that much easier. It is a pretty straightforward process that I think people should use.
